iPhone hacking update report

The group at iPhone Dev Wiki have released a proof of concept activation program for the iPhone that works with a valid token (deactivation works with any token). "unactivated" (pristine) iPhones can be activated with this spoofing code. Releasing this code under the GPL today this evening, for the Mac, as a universal binary. Download here [http://lpahome.com/iPhone/tool.zip/] . You can absolutely use the iPhone for iPod and Wifi with this patch.

Progress updates:
• iPhone Dir: The directory structure of the OS for the iPhone has been successfully extracted and can be found under SystemFileAndDirectoryList.
• DMG: Has been successfully unencrypted and unpacked.
• Unlocking: Groups are attempting to access the serial side of the radio to issue an unlocking code that will work.
• Services: Attempting to get SSH running on the iPhone.
• Restore process: This is tightly involved with the other efforts and is being worked on.
• Custom applications: Still unknown. It was thought that the iPhone might only run signed code, but it seems that this is not the case.

Focus area now:
• Focused at the moment on gaining access to the phone and issuing commands to the radio. They have identified the relevant unlock commands but have no way of issuing them to the radio or of testing the veracity of generator for unlocking.
• Several team members are trying to start services on the phone. SSH is a notable priority. Additional crew diving into the restore process, since this will be necessary to understand just how applications are deployed and whether or not, user-created applications on the iPhone outside of the AJAX applications Apple has seen fit to allow.
• A group attempting to understand in-depth the role of usbmuxd because it may be related to communication with the radio/baseband of the phone (which would lead to unlocking). The additional help should lead us to be able to adopt a "divide and conquer" approach.

iPhone in the nude!

Within hours after Apple iPhone went on sale, it has already been cracked open, disassembled and thoroughly analyzed. No surprises inside the case, but if you are into 'techno porn' and wanted to peep the iPhone getting undressed here. (Note: ‘live stream’ link, so it might die in the next few days). The people at PowerBook Medic are putting up a site offering accessories, replacement parts and a "free take-apart manual".

More undressing picture being done by thinksecret.com. Or download a package named ‘iPlayboy’ for the popular, sexy Playboy playmates. This 76MB package includes wallpapers, photos, video and a music track. All the images are non-nude. But they look GREAT anyway!

Quick overview of the basics:
• The iPhone is 4.5x2.4x0.5", and weighs 4.8 ounces (0.3 pounds). For reference, 18 iPhones weigh the same as 1 MacBook Pro.
• The display is 3.5" diagonal, 480x320 resolution. That's 153,600 pixels, or 12% as many as a 15" MacBook Pro.
• The iPhone supports four major different wireless protocols: Quad-band GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 802.11b/g WiFi, EDGE, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR.
• The iPhone has a 2 Megapixel camera.
• It also has H.264 video decoding, most likely in hardware.
• Huge 3.7 V Li-Ion Polymer battery with Apple model # 616-0290 L1S1376APPC.
• Touch screen control processor. Model numbers: S6087P1, GN03325, 2076A00R, and 1YFZASB3
• The chip on the bottom center that looks blank, actually has this text: MARVELL, W8686B13, 702AUUP. This is Marvell's 802.11b/g 18.4mm2 chip.
• Skyworks GSM/Edge Power amplifier (SKY77340)
• The silver chip to the left of the Skyworks chip reads CSR 41814 3A06U K715FB. This is a CSR BlueCore4-ROM WLCSP single chip radio and baseband IC for Bluetooth 2+EDR.
• The chip covered by the white sticker, has the part numbers 338S0289 and 8G60710 on it. EETimes claims this is an Infineon M1817A11.
• The chip with the blue dot on it is rumored to be an Intel 32 MB NOR flash chip. Part numbers 1030W0YTQ2, 5716A673, and Z717074A.
• The chip in the lower right reads 338S 0297 G0719, EL629058S03. Some claim this is an Apple-branded chip, but it's purpose is currently unknown.
• The chip in the lower left is an Infineon PMB8876 S-Gold 2 multimedia engine. Part numbers: 337S3235, 60708, and EL629058S03.
• The chip above the ARM is a Wolfson audio chip. Part numbers WM8758BG and 73AFMN5.
• Samsung manufactured Apple ARM chip. Numbers: 339S0030ARM, 8900B 0719, NOD4BZ02, K4X1G153PC-XGC3, ECC457Q3 716. The processor is likely stacked on the SDRAM, which looks to be 512 MB. This chip could have H.264 and MP3 hardware decoding built in. (what can we do with this baby?)
• The chip underneath the ARM is a Linear Technology 4066 USB Power Li-Ion Battery Charger, which Apple uses in the iPods as well.
• Samsung flash memory chip. BG means 32 Gigabits, the 1 means double that, so that's 64 Gigabits of storage, or 8 Gigabytes. (K9HBG08U1M)
• The phone had about 16 screws in total.

Hacking Iphone (unlocking Info):
• AT&T is the exclusive wireless carrier for iPhone in the US." Apple's iPhone Q&A - you can put in another SIM card, though it won't work. This is good, because it means the lock is somewhere in firmware - the AT&T SIM isn't physically welded or glued into the unit.
• Hackers will first need some sort of hardware or software solution to get at the phone's internal file system, then will need to disassemble key files and figure out what data to change.
• Now, it will probably take a week to unlock the iPhone.
• Anybody wanted to get under the hood of iPhone OS System, firmware can be downloaded here.

Apple iPhone hacking start today!

As coverage of the iPhone release today on Friday June 29 reaches boiling point, web applications providers are frantically pumping out versions of their applications for the iPhone. Meanwhile hackers are itching to begin probing the upcoming iPhone for security weaknesses and unlocking the device for 3rd party extensions and hacking applications. Hackers also interested on the type of processor that Apple chose to power the new device and what kind of assembly language "shellcode" might work on this chip. I have doubts about a mobile device being based on x86 chip. For me, I'm interested in exploiting areas for Bonjour services, WiFi & unlocking the device so that I can use it with any of my local GSM carriers.

• RSS reader
Apple has developed a web app at reader.mac.com that will bring RSS feeds to the iPhone. Users will be able to add the addresses of news feeds and check on headlines through the Apple-designed RSS aggregator.

• Custom ringtones
Custom ringtones will not be officially supported when the iPhone launches this week.

• SIM card tray
As has been previously disclosed, the iPhone's SIM card tray is located at the very top of the device and can be removed using a paper clip. iPhone owners will be able to use any AT&T SIM card in the tray, though the card will need to be activated through iTunes before using. Apple will recommend that customers use the SIM card that will ship with the iPhone.

• iCal integration
iPhone owners will be able to use the device to view multiple calendars synchronized from iCal. However, any events created on the iPhone will be added only to a single calendar. (Changes made to existing events will remain in their assigned calendar.) To add an event to another calendar, users will have to move the event on the desktop.

• iTunes 7.3
Apple has disclosed that the iPhone will require iTunes 7.3. While the update won't contain any significant Mac functionality, it will include Sync Services and Mobile Device Syncing on the Windows side.

• Operating System size
When formatted, the 8GB iPhone will have about 7.24GB of free space. The device's OS will take up about 300MB. Updated: In an effort to clarify where the "other" 440MB of space goes if an 8GB iPhone is left with 7.26GB, it is important to remember that Apple defines 1GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, as most disk manufacturers do. Operating systems, the iPhone's included, correctly define 1GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes. Thus, an "8GB" iPhone really only has "about" 7.5GB of usable space. The OS occupies "about" 300MB, leaving an 8GB iPhone with 7.24GB of free space.

• Using EDGE during phone calls
Sending an email or using Safari over the EDGE network will not be available while making a phone call; if you send an email, it won't send until after the call has ended. Such applications can, however, take advantage of Wi-Fi networking to use the Internet while placing a call.

• Antenna
The iPhone's antenna is located in the back part of the phone at the bottom, where the unit is colored black.

• Conference call
As previously noted in reviews, the iPhone's conference call feature holds up to six callers, including yourself. You will also be able to talk privately with an individual member of the conference while the other four are on hold; during this time, the other four can still talk to each other.

• Copy and paste
Published reviews have correctly reported that you will not be able to copy and paste on the iPhone. However, notes can automatically be sent from the Notes application to Mail.

Meanwhile, sources have disclosed that Apple's miniscule Bluetooth headset will sell for $129, while a deluxe dock that includes a built-in port for charging the headset alongside the iPhone will set you back another $49.

For iPhone buyers who want all the fixings, that brings the total out of pocket cost to about $777, plus tax, if one picks up the 8GB model.

In addition to the improved dock, the $49 deluxe dock will include a special travel iPhone connector cable that includes a port for charging the Bluetooth headset, so travelers will only need to tote one cable to charge both devices.

But you can't really control the internet, for the tech savvy in computer security...there's always a great way to stay Ultimate-Anonymity.

For anonymity, I would recommend:(please search & research my suggestion list on your own and don't email me on how to implement it, USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK! (See Disclaimer)

1. Spoofmac or something to change your network card MAC address (this is important on public networks)

2. Use a public network that lots of other people use (like a large university library. All those kids are probably downloading music anyways.)

3. Have a firewall up and run little snitch (Use netbarrier for a firewall--there's a pretty good configuration file for it floating around somewhere)

4. Use TOR for web browsing and other applications which support it (azureus and limewire maybe). TOR on firefox is amazingly easy to set up. There is absolutely no reason not to use it

5. Use MUTE for P2P (it is probably more anonymous than limewire through TOR)

6. Don't use P2P at all if you are paranoid... wired or KDX through TOR on a public network is probably about as safe as you can get.

7. And finally (and this is pretty basic web advice) DON'T GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION! Delete cookies, etc. Don't use you're real name. Don't check your email while you 'stayed anon'. Don't be talking on AIM. Your personal activities(email, etc.)should occur separately in space and time from your 'stayed anon' activities. When you check your email you should be
a) in a different place
b) at a different time
c) on a different network
d) with a different ip address and
e) with a different MAC address. That way, the network admin won't be able to associate the person who 'stayed anon' with the person who was checking their personal email account.

Things which I do not recommend:

1. JAP (its security is compromised)

2. netshade (iI have heard it is not secure. and its slow. However, if you set it to only use proxies outside of your country, the local authorities can't force them to say what you are doing)

3. IP block lists like peer vangaurd (Authorities can use TOR just as easily as you can, and they probably do. IP block lists block a ton of legit sites, and give you a false sense of security.)

4. Acting suspicious (don't be the only person in the library, at night, after hours, 'stayed anon' in full view of the door. Find large groups of people and blend in with the crowd.)

5. not having fun. (because that's what its all about, right?)

If you are running limewire or bittorrent through TOR on a public network using a fake MAC address, you are probably pretty safe. P2P at home is probably a pretty bad idea though.

Disclaimer:
Finally, know the limitations of the security you use. Know how it works, and how it can be compromised. (For example, how could police find out who you are, even if you were using something like TOR or MUTE?) If you are doing anything ILLEGAL, in time..the security expert and the police will know your true identity, so BEWARE!!!

apple Safari for windows and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

Safari will run on Windows, but I wondered why??? I understand iTunes runs on Windows to sell more iPods.

I'm pretty sure Google is the default search engine on Safari for Windows. Every time a search is performed and a sponsored link is clicked Apple makes money. If they can capture just a few percents of the Windows browser market share they will make tons of money just like Firefox and Opera does.

Great for Apple. Great for Windows users. Great for web developers.

After WWDC 2007 Apple Keynote Speech, I'm left a bit disappointed and wondering if Apple is taking iPhone over their head? Sorry but I'm missing out some of Apple's "Top Secret" features in Leopard. Part from a new Finder, new Desktop, new Quick Look and Bootcamp built inside.. I'm wondering what are the other "Top Secret" features? Steve demo'd almost the same things that he did at Macworld earlier this year..So far Leopard hasn't blowed me away, a part from Time machine..

You guys must be thinking that I'm just complaining about Leopard, but here's some features that I do like and look forward to, although they seem little compared to Spotlight, Dashboard etc. I might make a big mistake as Apple might be lurking in the dark with the really big features, there are almost 300+ new features in Leopard, but why did they not demo'd those at WWDC?

google iceberg logo with hidden message

Earth Day Google logo is a great concept but poorly executed. Feathering is sloppy. You can even see the bottom right corner slightly... but why iceberg?

Iceberg are magnificent ice mountains, frozen floating islands bobbing around the most northern and southern oceans. Aside from the fact they are frozen, the coolest thing about an iceberg is that only about 1/10th of the mass of the berg is visible above the water. Knowing the other 9/10th of the mass exists below the surface adds oomph to the awe. Google is like an iceberg. There is so much happening beneath the surface that even the most well informed observers can find themselves confounded and confused when contemplating the full Google's spectrum of services. Apparently, a similar sensation is felt around the Googleplex where an initiative to refocus on the core mission, "… to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," is said to be underway.

I'm pretty sure there is a hidden message.

Buzzzz news from Blogger.com that they've been working closely with the Picasa team over Picasa Web Albums. - all photos uploaded since December will appear in an album there, and will be migrating older photos too.

All blogs now has its own album in Picasa Web Albums. I registered and found that the tool is exciting because we now have a photo management interface for our blog's photos - for example we could order prints, use fancy email this photo feature, or easily embed the album somewhere else on the web. Be careful when you delete photos though, because deletions will affect both your blog and its album. Lastly, Blogger photos are now part of Picasa Web Albums' 1GB of free quota, which can be upgraded for a fee.

boxcloud, my easy way to share files with clients

As designer, videographer and what-not, I'm stuck dealing with larger file sizes to send quickly to clients. Using my webserver storage required me to use my valuable time to upload my file to them before someone else could download it.

But using BoxCloud is different, because you host the file on your own hard drive and share it through a small application on your computer. Not only does this offer a bit more security, but it gives you more control over what is shared, to whom, and how it is accessed. BoxCloud is Mac- and Windows-friendly, perfect for those non-techie client types. I am happy with my little 'boxcloud'.

OS X in Apple iPhone ?

Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced yesterday. Yeah, it: "iPhone," sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate.

A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet. The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June, Europe in fourth quarter, Asia in 2008. So anybody going to the US and get this phone for me soon . . . anyway i've got the phone mp3 ringtone for now.

Since Apple is a bit too busy making the sexy iphone, OWC and Axiotron are taking up the slack with their new ModBook, which hacks up MacBooks and turns them into glorious slate-style tablet computers. The duo didn't cut many corners, either, since their MacBook mods hold onto most of those original specs, plus add in an optional built-in GPS module, and of course that Penabled Wacom digitizer. Pen input runs at 20x display resolution, with 256 pressure levels and zero battery use, and the MacBook's LCD is protected with some Chemically Strengthened glass, complete with a paper-like texture and anti-reflective coating.

The ModBook is also shielded by aircraft grade magnesium alloy, with a copper and nickel layers for scratch resistance. Thanks to that slot-loading MacBook drive, the ModBook is apparently the only slate-style tablet computer with a built in CD/DVD drive, making it a nice option for portable DVD playback use. The ModBook is relying on Apple's Inkwell technology and other OS X enhancements for tablet functionality. Naturally, they're not exactly giving these things away, but the prices still seem reasonable for what you're getting: $2199-$2699 pre-order pricing for the "Good," "Better" and "Best" options. The latter two feature GPS, but if you pre-order now you can get it tossed into the low-end version as well. No word on an exact ship date, but it sounds like it won't be until March, April or later.

Google acquire YouTube for US$1.65 billion

After days of market speculation, it was announced that Google will acquire YouTube for US$1.65 billion.

It's a significant development for Web2.0 as bootleg videos will be another Google asset, indexed and systematically searchable. It also means that Google has a formula to overcome the barrage of copyright-infringement lawsuits that TouTube has faced.

This self-proclaimed media agency "Scoopt" acts as an online middleman, connecting cellphone-camera–equipped people with news outlets hungry for exclusive, eyewitness pictures.

Snap... Send... Sell... Money!

The cellphone photographer must agree to give "Scoopt" a three-month exclusive window to market it. During that period, the user cannot publish the photo anywhere—not even a personal blog. After the 90-day window expires, "Scoopt" will continue to peddle the picture, but the licensing is returned to the photographer.
